This study proposes to highlight and report my experience, as well as the difficulties we face in speaking the mother tongue of Terena, in this case, in the village in which I live, Aldeia Bananal, in the municipality of Aquidauana, district of Taunay. Mainly due to the fact that bilingual education is guaranteed by law, but there are several reasons that prevent its preservation. There are several factors within the village itself, such as shame, difficulties in speaking Portuguese correctly, the fear of not getting a job or continuing with studies for this reason. We noticed a certain prejudice among the residents themselves who do not understand the importance of its preservation. I am an academic on the Pedagogy Course and I realized that if we do not mobilize, over time our culture, our language, will certainly become extinct. We conclude that the importance of speaking the Terena language is relevant, it carries with it the preservation of our culture, our identity, our customs, and, mainly, our values. Indigenous education is a very relevant tool, as it highlights a direction in which the community of the Terena people can preserve our bilingual education.
