Resumo: Admission to university can trigger changes in students' lifestyles, including increased alcohol consumption. Objective: To analyze the influence of socioeconomic characteristics on alcohol consumption among university students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with students from a Public University of Cuiabá-MT, aged between 16 and 25 years. For data collection, a questionnaire was applied containing socioeconomic and lifestyle. The observed frequency distributions (%) were calculated and the chisquare test was used, considering a significance level of 5%, to evaluate the association between socioeconomic characteristics and alcohol consumption. The project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Julius Muller University Hospital of the Federal University of Mato Grosso, under the no 1,006, 048, date March 31, 2015. Results: Data from 1038 students were analyzed, of which 50.96% were male, 78.8% were aged between 16 and 19 years, 40.2% declared themselves as white skin color, 69.5% lived with their parents or relatives and 48.5% belonged to economy class B.The frequency of alcohol consumption in the last week was 38.34%, being higher among individuals who belonged to economy class A (52.60%, p <0.01) and among those who lived in a republic or others (47,13%; p= 0.002). Conclusion: It was observed statistical significance of the variables, economic class and with whom resides, with alcohol consumption among university students.

Objetivo: Analisar a influência das características socioeconômicas no consumo de bebida alcoólica entre os universitários. Métodos: Estudo transversal, realizado com estudantes de uma Universidade Púbica de Cuiabá-MT com idade entre 16 a 25 anos. Para coleta de dados, foi aplicado um questionário contendo questões socioeconômicas e de estilo de vida. Foram calculadas as distribuições de frequências observadas (%) e utilizado o teste do qui-quadrado, considerando o nível de significância de 5%, para avaliar associação entre as características socioeconômicas e o consumo de bebida alcoólica. O projeto foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa do Hospital Universitário Júlio Muller da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso, sob o parecer nº 1.006.048, de 31 de março de 2015. Resultados: Foram analisados dados de 1038 estudantes, sendo que 50,96% eram do sexo masculino, 78,8% tinham idade entre 16 a 19 anos, 40,2% se declararam de cor da pele branca, 69,5% residiam com os pais ou parentes e 48,5% pertenciam à classe econômica B. A frequência do consumo de bebida alcoólica na última semana foi de 38,34%, sendo maior entre os indivíduos que pertenciam à classe econômica A (52,60%; p<0,01) e entre aqueles que residiam em república ou outros (47,13%; p= 0,002).
