Efeito do extrato de Hibiscus sabdariffa sobre a reatividade vascular de ratos obesos

Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by accumulation of adipose tissue, and grows worldwide affecting children, youth, adults and the elderly. Several factors are related, including genetic, psychosocial, dietary, among others. It has already been shown that dyslipidemia and inflammation present in obesity leads to vascular diseases, causing vascular dysfunction. Hibiscus sabdariffa is a plant that has beneficial effects on obesity and its complications. In addition, authors reported vasodilator effect of Hibiscus sabdariffadirectly on the aortic rings. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate the effect of the treatment with Hibiscus sabdariffaextract on vascular reactivity in obese rats. For this we used male Wistars rats, which were divided into four groups: control (C), which received standard diet; control + Hibiscus sabdariffa (C + HS) that received the same diet plus the treatment with Hibiscus sabdariffa extract for eight weeks; obese (O), that received a carbohydrate-rich diet; and obese + Hibiscus sabdariffa that also had the same induction of obesity from the previous group and treatment with Hibiscus sabdariffa. At the end of the experimental period the animals were euthanized and the thoracic aorta rings were dissected for the vascular reactivity experiment. Fat was also removed and weighed for characterization of obesity and blood samples collected for biochemical analysis. According to our results, the a carbohydrate-rich diet was able to induce obesity in rats, and Hibiscus sabdariffahad an antiobesogenic effect because it decreased the final body weight and total fat in the obese. Treatment with Hibiscus sabdariffa had no effect on the levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and glycemia that are altered in obese rats. In addition, we found that treatment with Hibiscus sabdariffadid not alter the vascular reactivity of obese animals, but showed an increase in nitric oxide synthase activity only in control animals. Thus, the treatment with the extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa showed to have an important antiobesogenic effect, but it was not able to improve the vascular function of the aorta of obese rats.
