Resumo: INTRODUCTION: Medicinal plants are important sources of bioactive compounds, and are chosen for research from its popular use. The Jatoba (Hymenaea courbaril) is a large tree which occurs mainly in primary forest land and high floodplain features easy adaptation to unfavorable circumstances, the bark extract is indicated to treat flu, cystitis, bronchitis, infections bladder and as anthelmintic. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the biological effect of the fixed oil seed Hymenaea courbaril L. var courbaril as a possible drug for treating depression, anxiety, compulsion and memory. METHODS: lineage of mice were tested Swiss males (n = 8 and n = 10), with approximately 45 days of age. After the acclimation period, the animals were divided into 9 groups (negative control, diazepam, imipramine, Fixed caffeine and oil seed Jatoba (100 and 250 mg / kg). These substances were inoculated orally gavage using the technique, a 30-day period, that treatment was performed once daily at the same time. We conduct spontaneous locomotor activity tests of forced swimming, elevated plus-maze test to hide balls, inhibitory avoidance type "step-down". After behavioral testing the animals were sacrificed for measurement of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase in the brain tissue of animals participating in the inhibitory avoidance test of the "step down". Of this project approval number (23108.706870 / 2014-05) on the Ethics Committee in Animal Experimentation. RESULTS: Chronic treatment with fixed oil jatobá seed did not cause changes in animal mobility, and did not show antidepressant activity, anxiolytic and anti-compulsive. Since the inhibitory avoidance task type "step down" the groups treated with the oil jatobá the acute treatment, showed a significant difference in the increase in the latency time, improves spatial memory of short duration, in the group treated with oil 100 mg / kg, compared with the group treated with caffeine 10 mg / kg. The group treated with seed oil 250 mg / kg, showed an improvement in spatial memory short and long term. Chronic treatment with fixed oil jatobá seed significantly increased latency of animals in long-term memory, only the group receiving the highest concentration of oil (250 mg / kg). The dosage of the acetylcholinesterase seed oil treated groups showed a significant reduction of the enzyme compared with the negative control group and the treated caffeine. CONCLUSION: Thus, it is considered that fixed oil jatobá seed can benefit cognitive processes, however they suggest new studies for a more accurate assessment of this plant mechanism of action.
