Carcinoma de células escamosas em anta (Tapirus terrestris) mantida em cativeiro

The tapir (Tapirus terrestris) belongs to the family Tapiridae and to the order Perissodactylas, being a vulnerable species in the list of endangered species. Tumor disorders in the oral cavity are related to be found in these animals, such as squamous cell carcinoma. The objective of this study is to report the diagnosis and surgical treatment of this tumor in the oral cavity of a captive tapir. First, a rough, hyperemic mass was observed in the animal's jaw, a biopsy was collected and the diagnosis of focal fibrous hyperplasia was obtained. Local cryosurgery was performed, but after 12 months the mass doubled in size and volume. Surgical resection of the mass was performed, with a diagnostic hypothesis of squamous cell carcinoma according to histopathological report. There are not many reports in the literature of this type of tumor in this species, but in the domestic animals it is observed that the treatment is complex, having a high degree of relapse and metastasis to the regional lymph nodes. However, the treatment in this case was effective, with no such complications.
