The present study aimed to evaluate the potential of the use of O. pyramidale (balsa wood) in the manufacture of cement-wood panels. Panels with a nominal density of 1.10 g / cm³ were produced using Portland cement as a mineral binder and untreated wood particles treated with cold water, hot water and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The results showed that there is no need to treat the wood particles of balsa wood, since there was no significant contribution in improving the physical and mechanical properties of the plates, except for the water absorption test, where the treatments In cold water, hot water and NaOH differed from the control (in natura particle). The values obtained for the physical properties have met the specifications required by the cement-wood panel industries. However the values found for the mechanical properties did not meet the minimum requirements required by the Bison process.
