The technicist qualification model, predominant in the formation of civil engineers, is in crisis due to the new restructuring and reorganizing of the capitalist system. A new model designated competence is replacing this design. The concept of competence goes beyond the concept of qualification: it refers to the ability to take initiative, to go beyond the prescribed activities. This work was guided by the theories of competence in the context of civil engineering, and motivation was sustained on the interest in investigate this matter in order to understand how the profile of the resident engineer is molded within the civil engineering course of the Federal University of Mato Grosso, to mitigate waste that occur in the daily practice of this professional. The result created a report to support decision making, which can guide the Civil Engineering courses in Mato Grosso, as to meet the curriculum guidelines and pragmatic adjustments that are required to facilitate the work of the Engineer in Civil Construction companies in Mato Grosso.
