CLUSTER SAMPLING USING BITTERLICH METHOD FOR ARAUCARIA FOREST ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to estimate the basal area for two cluster sampling procedures, structural cross and line arrangements, comparing with complete inventory, in a fragment of Araucaria Forest in Parana State, using the Bitterlich method. The data used came from permanent plots established in the Irati National Forest. Sample points were distributed in a systematic way and each point were allocated 23 sampling clusters in line and 23 sampling clusters in cross both with four subunits each. The basal area factor used was 2. No significant difference was detected (p > 0.05) between the estimated averages by sampling clusters and obtained by the complete inventory. The two arrangements of clusters tested had low sampling errors (less than 7%) and equivalent, but with overestimation compared to the average parametric basal area, and the arrangement in cross showed a smaller difference (2.9%) than the arrangement in lines (4.9%). Although Bitterlich method is not widely used in Araucaria Forest, its use in sampling cluster, structured in cross or in line arrangements, was accurate for de basal area estimation. Keywords: forest inventory, georeferencing, basal area. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.14583/2318-7670.v02n04a02 |
