Este estudo teve como objetivo determinar o grau de competição por meio do Índice de Espaçamento Relativo (S%) em dois talhões de teca (Tectona grandis L. f.), com idades de 108 e 144 meses, sem desbastes e densidade inicial com 1.667 árvores por hectare. A base de dados empregada foi obtida mediante inventário florestal e complementada pela análise completa de tronco de 16 árvores dominantes. Os valores do S% foram inferiores a 15% nas idades superiores a 96 meses, indicando forte competição entre as árvores. Verifica-se que o S% reduz acentuadamente até a idade de 48 meses, devido ao rápido crescimento da teca nas idades iniciais. Os valores do S% associados ao crescimento diamétrico demonstraram que o início da competição em plantios de teca na região em estudo ocorre por volta dos 60 meses, indicando a necessidade de desbaste nessa idade. A técnica de S% pode ser empregada como indicativo do momento de aplicações de desbastes em povoamentos de teca.Palavras-chave: teca, manejo florestal, densidade, Hart-Becking. SPACING RELATIVE INDEX FOR STANDS OF Tectona grandis L. f. IN MATO GROOS STATE, BRAZIL ABSTRACTThis study aimed to determine the degree of competition through the Relative Spacing Index (S%) in two teak stands (Tectona grandis L. f.), with ages of 108 and 144 months, without thinning and initial density of 1,667 trees per hectare. The database used was obtained by forest inventory and complemented by full analysis of 16 dominant tree trunk. The values of S% are less than 15% in trees older than 96 months, indicating strong competition among them. It is found that the S% reduces markedly until the age of 48 months due to the rapid growth of teak in the early age. The values of S% associated to the diametric growth showed that the beginning of competition in teak plantations in the region under study occurs around 60 months, indicating the need for thinning at this age.
