SOIL RESISTANCE TO PENETRATION IN DEPTHS OF DIFFERENT SUBSOILING ABSTRACTThe subsoiling is a reduced soil preparation operation that provides conditions for the better development of the plants, and can also promote modifications in the physical attributes, such as density and soil resistance to penetration. The objective of this work was to evaluate the changes in soil resistance to root penetration in a clayey Latossolo with a clayey texture submitted to different depths of subsoiling for the implantation of forest stands. Soil preparation by a track tractor equipped with a mono-stem trailing subsoiler and V-shear type front blade, performing subsoiling at the depths (treatments) of 40 and 50 cm (S-40 and S-50). The mechanical resistance of the soil to the penetration (RP) was evaluated in two steps: before subsoiling (AS) and after subsoiling (OS), by means of an impact penetrometer. The results showed that RP presented values above 2 MPa in both treatments in the superficial layers (0 to 40 cm) before subsoiling. After subsoiling, RP values showed a significant difference by the “t” test at the 5% level. RP values decreased at all depths, with a reduction of 20% up to the 40 cm layer for both treatments, showing the importance of subsoiling in breaking the compacted layers of the soil. Keywords: forest soil preparation, compression, penetrometer.
