Resumo: | This article aims to analyze how mathematical knowledge, intended for female primary education, was established during the Imperial period, especially in Maranhão in the late 19th century. For this purpose, we seek to understand what was prescribed in the first Brazilian educational law of 1827, and the impacts of the sexist discourses of senators at that time on the education of girls. This study is qualitative in nature, with its theoretical-methodological framework rooted in the research of the history of mathematical education and supported by discussions of cultural history. The examined sources include official documents and studies already conducted in historical research. Before the Imperial Law of 1827 was sanctioned by the emperor, sexist debates by senators demonstrate how these men determined what should be the role of women in imperial society. Girls' studies were limited to reading, writing, counting, and domestic skills, educating them to be future mothers and diligent wives. In the field of mathematical knowledge, they were excluded from the teaching of geometry and had access only to the four fundamental operations of arithmetic. Thus, we observe a curriculum consistent with the patriarchy of the time. |
