Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a pioneer of a new trend, the literary mashup, whereupon the text is produced by means of reading and writing movements that empower it as a "tissue of quotations". This work aims to analyze such novel, whose authorship is Jane Austen’s and Seth GrahameSmith’s. This analysis considers the processes of adaptation that allowed the opening of the text to new meanings, as well as the procedures whereby, in the entrails of the text, the nineteenth century writing was mixed to the contemporary one. Thereby, by adopting the image of zombie not only as an element added to the plot, but as a process of writing and adaptation - the zombification of the novel by Jane Austen -, this dissertation analyzes the entrails of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, based on the concept of literary mashup, the genre that gave rise to the mixture of different texts within the work. From this genre, this dissertation discusses questions of the marketing process in the production of a mashup-novel and also the elements that allowed the existence of a hybrid (living-dead?) authorship in this work.
