ABSTRACT: The maturity test in Brazil was created in the nineteenth century by Decree 981/1890, and sought, by its initial proposal, to attend a public that sought to reach higher levels of schooling. The examination came together with the Benjamin Constant reform, so that the students approved there could apply for higher-level positions. The exam took on several characteristics through educational reforms throughout the studied period, such as Francisco Campos, Gustavo Capanema and LDBEN of 1961, and it was used by larger portions of the population with the most diversified purposes. The present work discusses the initial offer of the maturity test in Brazil and its effective application in Mato Grosso, focusing on the demand, through the identification and study of the results of the candidates that submitted to them. To do so, the research is based on the documentary analysis that records the examination, its organization and implantation in Mato Grosso, as individual records and records of the candidates for the exam, found in the collections of the Centro Memória Viva (CMV-UFMT) and the Secretariat Of Education of the State of Mato Grosso. In Mato Grosso, the maturity tests began to be applied in the 1930s, with small, the exam was only offered in Cuiabá. Only in the 1960s did the examination expand to other municipalities with increased demand for candidates. The exam is offered until the beginning of the 1970s, when it was incorporated into the supplementary teaching system.
