Obesity is a chronic disease associated with excess body fat that can trigger various pathologies. Its treatment must be initiated with clinical measures and if there is therapeutic failure, there is the option of surgical treatment. Post-operative rapid weight loss causes significant body changes that can compromise patients' body image and have a significant impact on the health and quality of life of individuals. The objective of this research was to evaluate the quality of life and the perception of the body image of patients submitted to bariatric surgery. An observational longitudinal study was carried out from December 2016 to October 2017 in a private clinic in the South of Brazil and the sample was composed of 104 obese individuals. Quality of life was assessed through the SF-36 questionnaire (The Medical Outcomes Study Short Form Health Survey) and the body image by the Brazilian scale of silhouettes for adults. Follow-up occurred in the pre and postoperative periods of 1, 2 and 6 months. Patients' quality of life improved significantly (p <0.001) during the pre and postoperative period in mental and physical health components. The body image of the patients evaluated presented distortion throughout the follow-up period, where the overestimation of the body image in the preoperative period was replaced by a 6-month underestimation in the postoperative period. Patients undergoing bariatric surgery had significant improvements in quality of life and altered body image distortion in the 6-month postoperative period.
