Resumo: | In the present study, we aimed to analyze Infant Education in the historical, legal perspective and in the perceptions of teachers who work in this educational stage. The study design is characterized as a qualitative and interpretative approach. The theoretical framework comprises five blocks, described as: (i) historical and Legislation; (ii) teacher training; (iii) professional identity; (iv) teaching practice in Early Childhood Education and (v) looking at children and childhood. The sample consisted of five Early Childhood teachers, with at least three years' experience, belonging to the public and private education networks of Santa Maria, RS. Data collection was carried out in 2018, through the application of a questionnaire, sent to the participants, via e-mail. The dissertation questions were analyzed by the technique of Content Analysis, according to Bardin (2015). Thus, three categories of analysis were contemplated in this study: reasons that led to teaching in Early Childhood Education; authors who serve as reference for the pedagogical practice in Early Childhood Education; and initial teacher training for Early Childhood Education. The results are arranged in the production of articles and manuscripts on the proposed theme. It is concluded that the teaching work in Early Childhood Education is complex and challenging, and for this reason it needs qualified professionals willing to change paradigms instituted along the constructive trajectory of the institutions and the formative of the teachers. Because Child Education is a relatively new profession in the Brazilian scenario, it needs to find its identity and impose itself in the current society as a profession. |

O delineamento do estudo caracteriza-se como uma pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa e de caráter interpretativo. O referencial teórico compreende cinco blocos, descritos como: (i) histórico e Legislação; (ii) a formação de professores; (iii) identidade profissional; (iv) prática docente na Educação Infantil e (v) o olhar sobre criança e infância. A amostra foi composta por cinco professores da Educação Infantil, com experiência mínima de três anos, pertencentes às redes de ensino pública e privada de Santa Maria, RS. A coleta de dados foi realizada no ano de 2018, por meio da aplicação de um questionário, encaminhado aos participantes, via e-mail. As questões dissertativas foram analisadas pela técnica de Análise de Conteúdo, segundo Bardin (2015). Desse modo, três categorias de análise foram contempladas nesse estudo: motivos que levaram à docência na Educação Infantil; autores que servem como referência para a prática pedagógica na Educação Infantil; e formação inicial de professores para Educação Infantil. Os resultados estão dispostos na produção de artigos e manuscritos sobre a temática proposta. Conclui-se que o trabalho docente na Educação Infantil é complexo e desafiador, e por esse motivo precisa de profissionais qualificados e dispostos a mudar paradigmas instituídos ao longo da trajetória construtiva das instituições e formativa dos professores.
