Resumo: From the premise of Siegfried Kracauer, according to which the aesthetic pleasure experienced by the mass at surface spectacles is legitimate and that it is possible to understand an epoch through its despised and despicable manifestations, this essay aims to analyze the understandings of Walter Benjamin and Vilém Flusser about the relationship between technical images and forms of knowledge. The reflection starts from the assumption that both authors glimpse, despite their vigilant pessimism, a critical form of thought through technique. The superficial character of the synthetic images would also not depart from the projective and fragmented aspect of an imaginative and non-Cartesian structure of thought. In any case, the possibility of a political and poetic use of images depends, for the two thinkers, on the interposition of the word. In Flusser’s terms, the task is to respond to post-history with the weapons of history.

A reflexão parte do pressuposto de que ambos vislumbram, apesar de um vigilante pessimismo, uma forma crítica de pensamento, via técnica. O caráter superficial das imagens sintéticas também não se afastaria do aspecto projetivo e fragmentado de uma estrutura de pensamento imaginativa e não cartesiana. De todo modo, a possibilidade de um uso político e poético das imagens depende, nos dois pensadores, da interposição da palavra.
