Resumo: | This article deals with the complexity of the criticism towards contemporary art. The departing point is the argument between Sainte-Beuve and Proust, in late 19th century Paris, concerning the appropriate method to criticise art. Whereas the fi rst defended an alleged scientifi c method, based on Positivism, the latter condemned the confusion between author and art. |

Como pano de fundo, expõe-se a querela entre Sainte-Beuve e Proust, na Paris do fi nal do século XIX, acerca do método apropriado para a análise crítica da obra de arte. Enquanto o primeiro defendia um método supostamente científi co, a reboque do positivismo, o último condenava a confusão entre autor e obra.
