Jaime and Ventura: individuations for an aesthetics of immanence (in António Reis and Pedro Costa’s cinema)

Resumo: The present paper aims to problematize the concept of immanence as proposed by Gilles Deleuze from Espinosa, within an aesthetical approach, considering its possibility in two cinematographic works. For this purpose, first, we will do an etymological approach to the concept of immanence; in a second moment, we will try to map the constitutive elements of a plan of composition, according to Deleuze and Guattari, that leads to an “expressive immanence” or “aesthetical immanence”. Finally, in a third moment, we will explore two possibilities for an aesthetical immanence in cinema, through two Portuguese films, “Jaime”, by António Reis, and “Cavalo Dinheiro”, by Pedro Costa. In the first case, the film will be taken as a whole; in the second, we will dwell on a specific shot of the film, establishing connections between them a posteriori.

Para tal, num primeiro momento, será levada a cabo uma aproximação etimológica ao conceito de imanência; num segundo momento, tentar-se-á mapear os elementos constitutivos de um plano de composição, nos termos de Deleuze e Guattari, por via do qual se manifestará uma «imanência expressiva» (Deleuze, 1968) ou uma «imanência estética» (Didi-Huberman, 2003). Por fim, num terceiro momento, explorar-se-ão duas possibilidades para uma imanência estética, a partir dos filmes Jaime, de António Reis, e Cavalo Dinheiro, de Pedro Costa.
