Resumo: The essay analises a literary mechanism of Machado de Assis' novel “Esaú e Jacó”through Gilles Deleuze's philosophical perspective. The study focuses on four elements of the work: the repetition of the central motive of the narrative; the game of references; the political, social and affective assemblage; and Flora’s refusal in chosing between her suitors.
