A grain of sand in the immensity of the sea: Who history can contribute to the elaboration of traumatic pasts

Resumo: Concerned with the lasting effects of atrocious experiences in recent past –such as that of state terrorism in Argentina– and the problem of intergenerational transmission of history, this work aims to conceptualize trauma at both ontological and epistemological levels. Taking an Argentinean controversy as the starting point, I will try to cross-sectionally address the epistemological problems that arise from the historization of traumatic pasts at metadiscursive and methodological levels. From the idea that the problem does not come from an ontological anomaly of the historical experience but from an epistemological limitation of the discipline, I will propose an inquiry that seeks, at the same time, to historicize and conceptualize traumatic experiences. My operative hypothesis is that trauma is not the antithesis of history but its remains. The redefinition of the dilemma in terms of aporia will allow us to address the implicit epistemological problems involved.

Tomando como punto de partida una polémica propiamente argentina, intentaré abordar de modo trasversal los problemas epistemológicos que se presentan en la historización de pasados traumáticos en un nivel metadiscursivo y al mismo tiempo metodológico. A partir de la intuición de que el problema no resulta de una anomalía ontológica de la experiencia histórica sino de una limitación epistemológica de la disciplina, propondré una indagación con vistas a conceptualizar y al mismo tiempo ubicar históricamente lo traumático. Propondré como hipótesis operativa que el trauma constituye un resto de la historia y no su antítesis.
