Resumo: This article discusses the relationship between slavery, the nation’s future projections and the foundation of the Brazilian Historic and Geographic Institute (IHGB) from canon Januário da Cunha Barbosa’s experimentalist texts, understood, according to Seymour Drescher, as an effective practice in search of alternatives to black slavery labor and the reflections resulting from it. Based on Reinhardt Koselleck’s concept of historical time, the article underlines the importance of slavery as a condition of possibility and a constitutive topic of the emerging Brazilian historiographical production, pointing to different ways of defining the role of slavery in the future projections outlined on the first IHGB debates.

Ele o faz mediante o estudo do experimentalismo do cônego Januário da Cunha Barbosa, entendido, conforme Seymour Drescher, como as práticas efetivas de busca de alternativas de mão de obra à escravidão negra e as reflexões delas decorrentes. Pautado pelo conceito de tempo histórico de Reinhardt Koselleck, o artigo aponta para a importância da escravidão como condição de possibilidade e temática constitutiva da nascente produção historiográfica brasileira.
