“The scourge of good men”: Antônio de Souza, scientific activities, abolitionism and civilization about Brazil in the 1800’s

Resumo: In the dawn of the 19th century, the sergipano Antônio Moniz de Souza (1782-1857), having the intention of carrying out studies on elements of nature and population from Brazil, undertook a long journey through the provinces of Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, and Bahia. In 1834, the result of this trip was published as a book, in which the visited populations' moral and ethical struggles were discussed and the author's understanding of the abolitionism and the dichotomy between savagery and civilization were revealed. In this paper, firstly we intend to analyze Antônio Moniz's writing as means of building of a view in which he constructed a distinction between Brazil and Portugal, and secondly to elucidate the obstacles to the process of civilizing the Brazilian Empire due to the lack of freedom of the enslaved population.

O resultado dessa viagem foi publicado como livro em 1834, no qual foram discutidas as mazelas culturais e morais das sociedades nas províncias visitadas e reveladas as suas acepções acerca do abolicionismo e da dicotomia entre barbárie e civilização.
