“From the Annales’ point of view”: the Revue des Annales and the making of social and economic history

This paper aims to investigate the role played by the Revue des Annales in the budding field of studies which would come to be known as Social and Economic History. The ideas proposed by Marc Bloch and Lucien Febvre in 1929 lacked novelty; yet, we argue that both historians were able to formulate a distinct way of enunciating their area of expertise, which would prove to be particularly efficient when compared to other strategies of enunciation, such as those proposed by Henri Sée and Henri Hauser. To prove such hypothesis, we examine these alternative propositions, comparing them to the ways in which the Annales employ the label “social and economic history”. With that, we aim to understand the enunciating strategies used by the annalistes while considering the objective conditions of their formulation, besides evaluating the role of these discursive strategies in the struggle of Social and Economic History for achieving disciplinary prominence.
