Varnhagen, Santarém and Avezac: an episode of the vespucian controversy (1842-1858)

Resumo:  Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen (1816-1878), the viscount of Santarém (1791-1856) and Marie-Armand d’Avezac de Castera-Macaya (1799-1875) were three historians and geographers who, in the 19th Century, wrote about Amerigo Vespucci and his voyages, about which there are more doubts than certainties up to this day (Which did he narrate and which did he actually take part in). Based on their writings and on some of their correspondence, as well as on later interpretations of their interventions, I will try to contribute to a better knowledge of the vespuciccian controversy, which can be characterized by the theory of eternal recurrence.
