During the 16th and 17th centuries, several English scholars focused on studies that made it possible to remedy difficulties in astronomy, navigation and surveying, through the development of works that addressed these areas. Among these authors, Thomas Hood (1556-1620) stands out, who wrote the treatise entitled The making and use of the geometrical instrument, called a Sector, presenting the construction and use of the Sector. In this instrument, three scales are described for its operation, one of which is the Chords scale, which had the purpose of solving problems involving circular regions. The methodology adopted for this work is based on a qualitative documentary research. In addition, this research aims to explore mathematical aspects related to the scale of chords created in this instrument, as well as to explain possible potentialities from the Sector.
