Resumo: The teaching labor has undergone several changes, many of them carried out by hegemonic groups, but many achievements by the organized category in order to become increasingly valued. teaching in Brazil came through the Jesuits who taught classes following Catholicism, being replaced by the Pombaline reform and subsequent by the modern bourgeoisie, which made it secular and the right of citizens, according to their class interests. However, this task did not mean equity, but training that met the demands of the mode of production in its social, economic and political context. As a profession, the social function of the teaching worker was often linked only to a mission or even vocation, and it is still possible to identify these discourses. This research sought to understand the conception of teaching work by Science and Biology teachers in a city in the south of Minas Gerais, considering its challenges and possibilities. Thus, this investigation was configured as a qualitative field-type research, in which we collected data through semi-structured interviews and an online questionnaire. Based on the data collected, we sought to reflect on teachers' conceptions about the teaching profession, their working conditions and the possibilities and challenges they perceive in dealing with the reality of the teaching profession. In this sense, our data indicated that the teaching profession is extremely important for a democratic society, but that it faces several deviations to materialize as a profession, from better social recognition, from civil society and political society, in the sphere of the State.
