THE USE OF ORGANIC WASTE IN DAILY ACTIVITIES: an experience with Elementary School students

The work is part of an Environmental Education project carried out at a school located in the municipality of state of São Paulo with elementary school students and sought to involve the school community in environmental issues, mainly in the problem involving the inadequate disposal of solid waste, pointing out alternative that enable their management. Among the activities carried out, the assembly of a compost bin stands out, presented to school members (employees and students) as an alternative for the treatment of organic waste generated at school, resulting in a compost, rich in organic matter, being this deposited in a space that in the future will become a vegetable garden. Laboratory experiments, such as the production of a biodigester and the synthesis of biodiesel, have contributed to confirming that some solid waste discarded in the home environment can be used as sources of clean and renewable energy; other residues served as raw material for the production of bar soap and recycled paper, and used cooking oil was used to make the soap, and the production of recycled paper relied on discarded papers that were not used by the members of the school, it should be noted that part of these papers served as reused material, fundamental for the assembly of notebooks. The practice developed in carrying out the activities was used as a strategic and effective tool in the dissemination of Environmental Education in the school, as demonstrated by the results obtained.
