Departamento de História, Instituto de Ciências Humanas e Sociais, Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto.O objetivo dessa dissertação é buscar compreender a representação da vila rural não somente como estrutura de produção econômica, mas também como expressão de status e poder para a elite romana, durante o principado de Nero (54-68 d.C.). Nesse sentido, nossa análise centra-se em alguns livros específicos do tratado columeliano: o livro primeiro, sobre o gerenciamento da propriedade, e o décimo primeiro livro as funções do vilicus. Nossa pesquisa insere-se no contexto dos estudos da economia romana que foram realizadas desde o meado do século XIX, na esteira do debate entre primitivistas e modernistas acerca da existência ou não do capitalismo no mundo antigo. É certo que esse debate já se encontra em grande medida matizado, mas seu impacto ainda se faz na análise dos chamados “agrônomos latinos” – Catão, Varrão e Columella – pautado, por um viés, sobretudo, econômico. Contudo, outras possibilidades de leitura procuram contemplar uma análise política e cultural de Columella. Nossa hipótese é que a vila tal como é representada, por Columella era postulada como um símbolo de status social e político, num quadro de competição intra-aristocrática por prestígio.The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the representation of the rural property as depicted by Columella not only as a structure of economic production, but also as an expression of status and power for the Roman elite during the principate of Nero (AD 54-68). Accordingly, our analysis focuses on some specific books of the De Re Rustica, specifically on the first book about the management of the property, and on the eleventh book, which describes the functions of the vilicus. Our research is set in the context of studies of the Roman economy that go back to the nineteenth century as illustrated by the debate between primitivists and modernists on the existence or not of capitalism in the ancient world. Nevertheless, a more recent bibliography on Roman villas highlights that this debate is being nowadays thoroughly revised, and new possibilities of reading the treaties of Cato, Varro and Columella are put forward.
