A desconsideração das peculiaridades geológicas e geomorfológicas locais, o crescimento acelerado da população e a inexistência de políticas públicas de planejamento urbano ajudaram a configurar o quadro atual. A complexidade dos componentes geológicos e geomorfológicos, associada às intervenções antrópicas têm contribuído intensamente para o surgimento de problemas geoambientais (alterações na paisagem, ocupação de áreas inadequadas, desmatamentos, alteração dos cursos das drenagens, poluição das águas fluviais com efluentes líquidos e pelo descarte irregular de resíduos sólidos e entulhos diversos). Na área urbana são freqüentes as ocorrências de movimentos gravitacionais de massa e erosão, além do risco de inundação pelo transbordamento do Ribeirão do Carmo e afluentes. Inicialmente este trabalho abordou o estudo do meio físico do Município no geral e de sua área urbana em particular, enfocando os aspectos geológicos e ambientais, com objetivo principal de fornecer subsídios para o ordenamento territorial em ambos os níveis e a agregação das informações sobre o meio físico, em um único documento. Na segunda etapa, a partir da análise de documentos cartográficos compilados e produzidos para o território municipal, foram avaliadas as características gerais dos terrenos, os conflitos de usos e os impactos existentes, visando definir a capacidade das unidades de território, para acolher os diversos usos. No âmbito da área urbana, foram detalhados os trabalhos de cartografia geotécnica existentes enfocando os principais problemas relacionados ao meio físico e seu uso e elaborado um cadastro geral de ocorrências de processos geodinâmicos. Os elementos obtidos nas etapas anteriores possibilitaram, numa última fase, a elaboração de cartas temáticas derivadas (carta de risco a processos geológicos, carta de recomendação de uso do solo, etc.) que foram a base para a análise final do meio físico e a proposição de medidas mais adequadas em relação ao uso e ocupação territorial.In the last years Mariana county has confronted several problems recurrent of physical environment bad utilization. The disrespect of local geological and geomorphological peculiarities, the fast population growth, and the absence of urban public political planning contributed to the present situation. The complexity of the geological and geomorphological components, associated with antropic intervention, have contributed for arise the geoenvironment problems (landscape alteration, inappropriate areas ocupation, deforestation, drainage flux alteration, fluvial water polution with fluid effluents and by irregular dumping of solid wastes and several debris). In the urban area are constant the occurrence of mass and oblation gravitational movements besides innundation risk by Ribeirão do Carmo and affluents spill. Initially’ in general this work approached the county physical environment study and, in particular, of its urban area, focusing the environment and geological aspects with main objective to supply subsidies for territorial ordination in both levels, and information’s aggregation about physical environment, in a unique document. In a second degree, from analysis of compiled cartographical documents and produced by country territorial, were evaluated the general land characteristics, the used conflicts, and the existents impacts, with the objective to define the capacity of the territorial units, to greet the several used. In the urban area ambit were detailed the existents geotechnic cartographic works, focusing the main problems related with the physical environment and its used, and elaborated a general cadastre of the geodynamic processes occurrences.
