Resumo: The aim of this research was to investigate the prevalence of cerebral vascular accident (AVC) in the postoperative of myocardial revascularization, from January 2000 to September 2003, in a reference Hospital at Ceará state, Brazil, identifying the risk factors related to the occurrence of AVC in the postoperative of this surgery. It was a quantitative study. The study population consisted of patients from both sexes, of all age groups, that had being submitted to myocardial revascularization surgery and that presented or not complications, including AVC. The studied variables were: sex, age, internment time, number of deaths, risk factors, kind of surgery, use of extracorporeal circulation and kind of postoperative complications. Data showed that the myocardial revascularization surgery was predominant in men, between 60 and 69 years old. In relation to the risk factors, only 18 (2.8%) of the 650 studied patients did not present any risk factor. There were found 53 cases of postoperative cerebral vascular accident and from these, 52 (98,1%) were ischemic and only 1 (1.9%) hemorrhagic. Among the complications that most appeared in the postoperative, pointed out the acute myocardial infarction, followed by respiratory infection and pleural effusion. From the 58 patients that died, 27.6% had postoperative AVC. It is concluded that there was no statistical significance in the association between the occurrence of postoperative cerebral vascular accident and myocardial revascularization surgery.
