The Republican Reaction and the carioca press for the 1922 VI South-American tournament of football: an analysis in the pages of O Imparcial (The Impartial) and Correio da Manhã (Morning Courier)

Resumo: We seek with this article to analyze part of Rio de Janeiro’s press produced views about the VI National South-American tournament of football, which took place in 1922 at Rio de Janeiro as part of the celebrations for Brazil’s independence centenarian. Specifically, we seek with this to highlight how this tournament was covered by O Imparcial (The Impartial) and Correio da Manhã (Morning Courier), having these two papers criticized the political regime running at that time however favorable to the Republican Reaction, a trend started in 1921 which quested for breaking the logics of the Politics of the Governors of Brazil. We see as important the analysis of these journalist sources for better comprehension of this object, considering they left as a result different views allowing an easier understanding of the relations among football, the nation and the Brazilian society at the prime of the 1920’s.

De forma mais específica, buscaremos destacar como esse torneio foi abordado em O Imparcial e Correio da Manhã, tendo esses dois periódicos realizado críticas ao regime político vigente no período e se alinhado favoráveis à Reação Republicana, movimento iniciado em 1921 e que buscou quebrar a lógica da Política dos Governadores no Brasil.
