Walter Rodrigues and “Colunão’s” contributions to alternative and critical journalism in Maranhão

The aim is to analyze, through documentary research, the importance of “Colunão”, produced and edited by Walter Rodrigues. Protagonist, in a certain way, of investigative journalism in Maranhão, especially through the use of information captured from credible sources, sometimes from the public sector itself, Rodrigues worked in the main newspapers in São Luís: “O Imparcial”, “O Estado do Maranhão” (discontinued a few years ago ), a small newspaper. Using printed copies of the Column from the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century as a corpus, it is possible to verify Walter Rodrigues' fight for freedom of expression. The point of view for the analysis is the cultural history of the media, with an emphasis on the place of memory. “Colunão” was guided by the defense of fundamental rights in the exercise of full citizenship. It is concluded that there are perennial traits in the operational mode of press organizations with a bias towards looking outside conventional media systems: the case of Colunão.
