The production of compost from organic waste, including seaweed for the production of fertilizer is one of the forms suitable for the use thereof. Macro and micro nutrients are very important for the recycling plant in the environment, encouraging communities to reuse solid waste found in the community. This dissertation seeks to evaluate a compost production proposal using “arribadas” seaweed to grow community gardens in a fishing community located in the Penha Beach. The dissertation research the use of algae found on the beach, brought by the tide, to produce compost and grow vegetables to this community in the Penha fishermen's association. The goal is to recycle the “arribadas” algae, promoting environmental education through composting and production of a community garden, contribute to local sustainable development. The project showed positive results regarding the quality of the compound developed from the washed and unwashed seaweed, nutrient difference not disqualified or one or the other. We used pepper seeds to make the evaluation of germination and the results were performed at making the community garden where we used five types of vegetables (lettuce, cilantro, parsley, chives and chili). Community participated from the collection of algae, transportation, assembly composting and own garden, which called for the installation of the garden were suspended in order to avoid common to local animal attack. The garden, made with plastic bottles, innovative technique of reusing solid waste, used for the controlled production of vegetables, as well as to promote the incentive system for the production of vegetables in their own homes of fishermen, where they lead a mounted bottle and exchange for empty bottles for new production of vegetables in the association. The study showed a great contribution to the local sustainable development, which may be extended to other fishing communities.
