Resumo: | This study aimed to investigate the mother-infant interaction in babies with visual impairments, by analyzing the styles of mother's speech, the nonverbal behaviors of mothers and infant communicative behaviors. In order to better understand the way in which the mother relates to the baby, we decided to apprehend maternal conceptions of child development, considering the assumption that these concepts can be related to how the dyads interact. As theoretical support, we adopted the social interaction perspective. According to this perspective, the first relations between babies and their primary caregivers (mothers) are considered essential to the promotion of development. Therefore, the interaction is recognized in a bidirectional way, that is, both the mother and the baby are active members in the interaction, in which the behavior of one influences the actions of the other and vice versa. In this study six dyads participated, three babies with visual impairment and three babies with typical development, whose data were used as parameters. The babies were between six and thirteen months at the beginning of observations, which took place at home in a free play situation. For each dyad were performed three videos, lasting 20 minutes each one. Before the observations, it was carried out individual interviews with the mothers, in order to cover maternal conceptions of child development. Both observations and interviews were literally transcribed and analyzed, respectively, by the frequency obtained with the use of two components of the computer system CHILDES, that is, the CHAT and CLAN programs and by content analysis of categories and themes proposed by Bardin. In general, the interviews showed the perception of mothers on the development of children and their limitations in the case of babies with visual impairments. For the observations, it was privileged both the communicative aspects and the interactive aspects. It was possible to realize the high number of manager-type linguistic styles, both in the mothers of infants with visual impairment and in the mothers of infants with typical development. Babies, in turn, were demonstrated spontaneous behavior, referring to body movements. The interactive episodes that showed and did not indicate scenes of joint attention were considered based on the continuity and discontinuity of the interaction. Both episodes were observed in the two groups, but with mothers of infants with visual impairments, speech verbal gestures and actions stood out, acting as additional resources in the promotion of interactions. It is possible to consider our results as relevant to understand the initial communication between mothers and babies with visual impairment and thus to respond not only the important theoretical questions about language development, but also think of interventional strategies to facilitate the mother baby relationship. |
