Resumo: Noise is a physical agent which can cause both auditory and extra-auditory effects. Regarding the extra-auditory effects related to noise, anxiety is a symptom still little studied, but it is a common psychiatric disorder in the population exposed to occupational noise. It could be defined as an emotional response characterized by physiologic, psychological and behavioral reaction to situations of threat or undetermined danger. In order to treat or minimize the anxiety disorders, there are available anxiolytics drugs such as benzodiazepines, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants, among others. However, they cause side effects, which often preclude the use of the drug. Presently, there have been developed researches which employ essential oils to treat anxiety, reducing the possibility of side effects. The Citrus aurantium L. essential oil has not only demonstrated action on the central nervous system by reducing the behavioral effects in animals, but also it has been used by health professionals to restore emotional well-being, reduce depression, anxiety and stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the Citrus aurantium L essential oil on the anxiety of workers exposed to occupational noise. It was a clinical trial (phase II) and model of experimental study. The study sample consisted of 48 workers of a paper industry in Paraíba, Brazil, exposed to occupational noise, aged between 20 and 51 years, all male. The workers, who met the inclusion criteria for the study, were divided into four groups, matched according to their ages: experimental high anxiety group (n = 8), high-anxiety control group (n = 8), experimental low anxiety group (n = 16) and low-anxiety control group (n = 16). Workers in the experimental group were exposed to inhalation of Citrus aurantium L. (10 mL) for 25 minutes alone in a room with a stretcher. The psychological parameters (STAI-state) as well as the physiological parameters (blood pressure, heart rate, extremities temperature and electrical conductance of the skin) were evaluated before and immediately after the exposure, in another room. The individuals of the control groups have participated of the same trial, but without inhalation of the essential oil. The results were analyzed by means of parametric ANOVA tests and Pearson s correlation. There was a positive correlation between STAI-trait and SRQ-20, with the high anxiety groups presenting higher scores. Through the application of the STAI-state, before and after inhalation of Citrus aurantium L., it was demonstrated a reduction of the scores of those with low and high experimental anxiety. Concerning the measure of physiological parameters, it was observed a reduction of the blood pressure, heart rate and skin electrical conductance only in the low anxiety group. Therefore, the results are evidence of the Citrus aurantium L anxiolytic effect immediately after an acute intervention in the groups of low anxiety and high anxiety, regarding psychological parameters; but, considering the physiological parameters, only in the low anxiety group.
