Vida e obra do poeta popular surdo Maurício Barreto: um estudo de abordagem semiótica

Even though Brazilian deaf subjects share the same nationality as the hearing ones, they have different characteristics due to their development as bicultural and bilingual citzens, and to their having aspects peculiar to their own culture, the culture of the deaf people, which is a people with no geographic landmarks. Due to this fact, this study aims to promote a better understanding of the deaf culture, their language, their values and their beliefs by Brazilian society by means of Greimas's Semiotics , which dialogues with studies on the deaf culture based on the authors Diana Barros, José Luiz Fiorin, Fatima Batista, amongst others such as Hall, Strobel and Peixoto. This paper’s proposition was to study about the life and works of the deaf Northeastern popular poet Mauricio Barreto, specially his poetry named 24 de abril Lei da Libras, as well as to catalogue his works (of all genres), to make a bibliographic survey on the poet and, lastly, to analyse the chosen poem based on the three levels of the semiotics study: elementary, narrative and discoursive. Being, thus, able to show the riches of this literature, the insertion of the deaf in society through the enhancement of language, as well as to promote both the preservation and the valorisation of this cultural heritage that is Deaf Literature.
