“Dentro da barriga da minha mãe eu bebia vegetal”: a vivência das crianças no mundo de Hoasca

Resumo: | The scientific view of a child it’s going through substantial epistemological changes since the beginning of the twentieth century. By the 1970s and the 1980s, the critical debates took place and starts questioning methods and ethics, as well as epistemological issues. Despite the growth of research on this area, children remain with little scientific visibility if it compares with adult-centered themes. In anthropological and sociological studies, the invisibility of children is greater when it comes to religious contexts and their sociability. This investigation seeks to observe kids that attend a temple, also called “núcleo”, of the Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal – a Christian and reincarnationist religion. In the ritual, the members of this Brazilian religion drink a psychoactive tea, called “Hoasca” or “vegetal”. The main goal is to understand the social and ritual place of the children in União do Vegetal (UDV). This research is based on the process of religious socialization at Núcleo Conselheiro Salomão Gabriel, in the city of João Pessoa-PB. It follows the experiences of the children’s group. It verifies the activities developed with the group and examines how the children are included and how they react to the rituals. The hoasqueiras children, as they are named in this research, have access to the religious space accompanying their parents. However, the presence of the kids in the environment goes beyond religiosity since it has proved an important social interaction space, with friendship bonds, child’s plays and contact with nature. The analysis is made through the emic perspective. Regarding theoretical-methodological aspects, this is qualitative research. The techniques of semi-structured interviews predominate, mainly with children, but including adults, and participant observation as well. The age group of the main collaborators is between four and eleven years old and the group is composed by thirteen girls and boys. Drawings have also been an important tool to collect data among children. The results show a religious practice centered on the family and hierarchy, without child occupation in it. Although the kids have no role in the rituals, the religion is very open to them. They have an active participation. Even if they cannot participate in all the sessions, they can be present in some rituals. The adults are guided to help the kids when they want to drink the tea ritualistically, and the adults also must acknowledge and consider the children will. The socialization is a two-way street, the children insert themselves and are inserted into religious practice. Both the perception of religiosity and the socialization are evidenced by the triad pairs, child’s plays and nature. The experience of the children’s group among peers differs in the UDV due to this direct connection with the natural world. It has relevance both in the social and religion life since nature is considered sacred. |

Le regard scientifique sur l’enfance a connu de considérables changements épistémologiques depuis le debute du XXème siècle, se poursuivant avec les débats critiques des années 70 et 80, problématisant les méthodes et l’éthique. Malgré l’augmentation des recherches dans ce domaine, les enfants restent scientifiquement peu visibles par rapport aux thématiques liées aux adultes. Dans les études anthropologiques et sociologiques, cette invisibilité est accentuée dans le contexte religieux. Cette enquête a pour but l’observation d’enfants qui fréquentent un temple du Centre Spirituel Bénéficiaire de l’Union du Végétal – une religion chrétienne et réincarnationiste – et qui consomment rituellement un thé psychoactif appelé Hoasca ou végétal qui est ingéré par les adeptes de cette religion brésilienne. L’objectif est de comprendre le lien social et rituel des enfants de l’Union Du Végétal – UDV – en se basant sur le processus de socialisation religieux du Centre Conseiller Salomao Gabriel accompagnant les expériences du groupe d’enfants, contrôlant les activités pratiquées avec ce dernier et examinant comment les enfants sont associés et participent aux rituels. Les enfants “hoasquiers”, comme je les nomme dans ce travail accèdent à l’espace religieux en accompagnant leurs parents, mais leur présence dans ce lieu va au-delà de la religiosité car il s’agit d’un espace important d’interaction sociale, de construction de lien d’amitié, de jeux et de contact avec la nature. L’analyse est réalisée au travers de la perspective émique. Concernant les aspects théorico-méthodologiques, il s’agit d’une recherche qualitative où prédominent les techniques d’entretien semi-structuré, principalement avec les enfants mais incluant aussi les adultes, ainsi que l’observation participative. Les principaux participants avaient entre 4 et 11 ans et le groupe comptait un total de 13 filles et garçons. Les dessins ont également été un outil éclairant dans la collecte de données au sein des enfants. Les résultats présentent une pratique religieuse centrée sur la famille et la hiérarchie sans que l’enfant puisse y occuper un espace. Bien que l’enfant ne joue aucun rôle dans les rituels, c’est une religion très ouverte aux enfants, ils y participent activement, principalement car, bien qu’ils ne soient pas présents à toutes les cérémonies, les adultes sont invites à répondre à leurs demandes de boire le thé rituellement en considérant et reconnaissant leurs volontés. La socialisation est une voie à double sens, les enfants s’insèrent et sont insérés dans la pratique religieuse. Autant la perception de la religiosité que la socialisation sont réalisées au travers de la triade: pairs-jeux-nature. L’expérience du groupe d’enfants se différencie dans l’UDV par ce lien direct avec le monde naturel qui est très présent dans la vie sociale comme religieuse, la nature étant considérée comme sacrée.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESO olhar científico sobre a criança vem atravessando consideráveis mudanças epistemológicas desde o início do século XX, continuando com os debates críticos que aconteceram a partir das décadas de 70 e 80, problematizando métodos e ética. Apesar do crescimento de pesquisas na área, as crianças continuam com pouca visibilidade científica, quando comparadas com temáticas adultocentradas. Nos estudos antropológicos e sociológicos, a invisibilidade é maior quando se trata de contextos religiosos e sua sociabilidade. Esta investigação busca observar crianças que frequentam um templo do Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal – uma religião cristã e reencarnacionista – e que consomem ritualisticamente um chá psicoativo, denominado Hoasca ou vegetal, que é ingerido por sócios/as desta religião brasileira. O objetivo é entender o lugar social e ritual das crianças na União do Vegetal – UDV – tendo por base o processo de socialização religioso no Núcleo Conselheiro Salomão Gabriel, acompanhando as vivências do grupo infantil, verificando as atividades que são desenvolvidas com ele e examinando como as crianças são incluídas e se incluem nos rituais. As crianças hoasqueiras, como as nomeio no trabalho, acessam o espaço religioso acompanhando os pais, contudo a presença delas no ambiente vai além da religiosidade, já que se mostrou um espaço importante de interação social, construção de laços de amizade, brincadeiras e contato com a natureza. A análise é feita através da perspectiva êmica. Em relação a aspectos teórico-metodológicos, trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, onde predominam as técnicas da entrevista semiestruturada, principalmente com crianças, mas incluindo adultos, além da observação participante. A faixa etária dos principais colaboradores/as está entre 4 e 11 anos e o grupo soma um total de 13 meninas e meninos. Os desenhos também vem sendo uma ferramenta relevante na coleta de dados entre crianças. Os resultados apresentam uma prática religiosa centrada na família e na hierarquia, sem que a criança possa ocupar um lugar nela. Apesar de as crianças não terem papel nos ritos, é uma religião muito aberta, a elas, que têm participação ativa principalmente porque, ainda que não possam estar presentes em todas as sessões, participam de alguns rituais e os adultos são orientados a atendê-las quando elas querem beber o chá ritualisticamente, reconhecendo e levando em consideração o seu querer. A socialização é via de mão dupla, o grupo infantil se insere e é inserido na prática religiosa. Tanto a percepção da religiosidade quanto a socialização são evidenciadas pela tríade pares-brincadeira-natureza.
