Throughout the years, narrative studies have become fundamental for research in the literary field. Understanding a narrative goes beyond following its plot. It is also about observing its structure, the stages of the process that convey meaning to the work and its phenomena. Furthermore, although there is a lot of research and articles on film adaptation, it is rare to find works on literary adaptation from the film. This is evidenced by the scarcity of academic investigations that normally focus on the transposition of literature into cinema, rarely the other way around. Also worrying is the lack of studies aimed at metaleptic and mise en abyme narrative elements, as well as understanding the interpretative effects they can generate. The existence of this gap makes academic advancement in the area difficult, since it is through the absorption of the elements that build the structure – without dissociating from the plot – that one can, in fact, analyze a work. In this sense, the main purpose of this thesis is to analyze the structural phenomena of mise en abyme and metalepsis present in the narrative of the book Pan's Labyrinth (2019), by Guillermo Del Toro and Cornelia Funke. To achieve this objective, two specific objectives were established: the first one consists of identifying the presence of mise en abyme and metalepsis in the narrative structure of the adaptation, while the second seeks to analyze the construction of a labyrinthine narrative aesthetic based on these elements. In our dissertation, we identified in the corpus the presence of mise en abyme from infinite reduplication and different types of metalepsis in the narrative. In this intricate game of mirrors, the nested stories not only intertwine with the main plot, sharing characters, symbols and settings, but they also enrich the reading experience by adding layers of meaning.Finally, it is believed that this work will have a significant impact on the field of literary studies, especially with regard to narrative structure. The conclusions of this investigation can be used as a theoretical basis and inspiration for future research, becoming a valuable resource for the academic community.
