This dissertation sought to make a diagnosis of the selective collection, focusing on the work developed by the pickers of the Mandacaru neighborhood and its immediate surroundings, in the city of João Pessoa - PB, evaluating them as an instrument for local Sustainable Development through indicators. Specifically, the objectives were worked on in two articles, through which it was possible to understand the reality through indicators of the National Sanitation Information System - Solid Waste (SNIS-RS), which was explained in article 01 “Panorama of the Management of Solid Wastein João Pessoa, Paraíba, between 2010-2016 ”; as well as undertakings, actions and social actors related to the selective collection activities of the chosen region were also investigated, and discussed in article 02 "Panorama of Selective Collection in João Pessoa, bringing elements to support public policies". The study starts from the hypothesis that the collectors in the analyzed region, associated or not, are not yet integrated with municipal solid waste management. Methodologically, a qualitative and quantitative descriptive research was carried out. Data collection took place through documentary research, with consultation and analysis of legislation and official reports related to the solid waste sector. A field visit was made to associations of waste pickers, participant observation of activities with separate waste pickers. Interviews and questionnaires were also conducted with these actors and with municipal managers. Finally, to systematize the information obtained, the system of PEIR indicators was chosen, through which the current conditions of the collectors and the development of their activities in the studied region were evaluated. Among the findings of the study, it was verified that the municipal solid waste management has presented a low implementation of the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) regarding the analyzed indicators of the SNIS-RS. From this observation, it was observed the important role that collectors can play in the municipal selective collection. However, the results indicate that the situation of the associated and loose collectors in the region is multifactorial. And for its activity to be considered sustainable, it must be able to be economically rewarded and performed in order to integrate them socially.
