Resumo: In 1856, during the cholera epidemic that hit the reef, measures were implemented to prevent the disease, which presupposed the social control of the poorest sections of the population. The article discusses how these measures demonstrate the power relations involving public and medical authorities in Recife of the nineteenth century.
