Knowledge in circulation in Portuguese America: students from Maranhão at the University of Coimbra (1778-1823)

Resumo: Study of the circulation of printed between São Luís and Lisbon, in the period 1778-1823, based on the documentation of the Royal Censorship Bureau, preserved by the National Archives of Torre do Tombo. Aim for a variety of reasons that promoted the displacement of men and books for São Luís, at one time comprising experienced important changes in the captaincy. We assume the distinction between literacy and scholarship, condition for such movement is perceived in its diversity of motivations, not always related to the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Then emphasize remittances printed in Maranhão students who studied at the University of Coimbra, stressing some titles that brought (or tried to bring) in their luggage, and its role as senders of books for the captaincy.

Apontamos para as variadas razões que promoveram o deslocamento de homens e livros para São Luís, em um momento que compreende importantes transformações vividas na capitania. Partimos do pressuposto da distinção entre letramento e erudição, condição para que tal movimentação seja apreendida em sua diversidade de motivações, nem sempre relacionadas à difusão do saber científico. Em seguida, enfatizamos as remessas de impressos dos estudantes maranhenses que estudaram na Universidade de Coimbra, salientando alguns títulos que trouxeram (ou tentaram trazer) em suas bagagens, e sua atuação como remetentes de livros para a capitania.
