Resumo: When comparing the French and English empires with the Roman Empire, Hannah Arendt in her book "The Origins of Totalitarianism" claimed that the art of building empires as the Roman way was lost. The great powers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were never able to recreate a structure, as in antiquity, that were able to hold together identities and cultures for a long period in a centralized political body. From this perspective the aim of this article is to discuss, in general terms, within a comparative perspective, the strategies used by British, French and Romans, in the construction and maintenance of their empires respectively in the last quarter of the nineteenth and mid-twenty century and the first and second centuries AD.
