Memories of a delusion: Manuel Querino and Salvador's urban reforms (1912-1916)

This article presents a historiographical analysis oriented by the idea of Places of Memory, in the sense proposed by Pierre Nora, in the context of post-abolition in Salvador, Bahia. For this purpose, it is approximated the urban reforms carried out in the city between 1912 and 1916 and its descriptions presented in the memorialistic book Bahia de Outrora, published in 1916 by the black intellectual Manuel Querino. In this analysis, it is used the notion of Cultural Arena, proposed by Richard Morse in the context of urban history, which approaches the implantation of modern projects by their culture products. This notion is re-elaborated from the idea of subalternity present in Spivak, faced by the differences of race and class presented in the analysis. Finally, it is observed how Querino’s literature, based on these categories, may contribute to the study of the Places of Memory in the context of the post-abolition.
