Political press and popular support on the eve of Praiera: Lopes Gama and journalistic clashes between 1845 and 1846

Resumo: The purpose of this text is to elucidate ways in which popular support was enlisted on the eve of the Praieira Insurrection, paying attention to the journalistic performance of Miguel do Sacramento Lopes Gama (1792-1852). First, a historiographical reflection is undertaken on the intrinsic relations between the electoral process, the degree of campaign mobilization, the urban growth of Recife and the party consolidation during the 1840s. Then, the sudden change in Lopes Gama´s journalistic position is analyzed after him joining the Praieiro Party. Finally, reflections will be made on two practices that the press employed to reach broad social sectors, especially the unlettered population of the capital, but also the literate world: the use of verses and the popular stories.

É empreendida, primeiramente, uma reflexão historiográfica acerca das intrínsecas relações entre processo eleitoral, o grau de mobilização das campanhas, o crescimento urbano do Recife e a consolidação partidária durante a década de 1840. Depois, é analisada a brusca mudança no posicionamento jornalístico de Lopes Gama, após este aderir ao Partido Praieiro.
