Notes on a young sexagenarian: the journal Estudos Universitários (1962-2022)

This essay aims to present the history of Estudos Universitários: revista de cultura (EUs), created under Paulo Freire’s management of the Cultural Extension Service (SEC) of the then-called University of Recife (UR), from an academic and emotional perspective, merging data from 16 years of research dedicated to EUs with the extracurricular experiences the author has had in relation to the publication and its many collaborators. In view of the commemoration of its 60th anniversary and the political context of uncertainty and insecurity, a recapitulation of the periodical becomes necessary, bearing in mind the Freirean thought of history as a possibility. This essay presents an interesting parallel between the 1960s, when the journal started, and the first decade of the 2000s, with its utopias and progressive political movements; and proceeds to display the historical and geographical contexts of the journal’s creation and dissemination, as well as its collapse, its return under a more conservative direction, its challenges against the dictatorship and its new hiatuses and, finally, its definite return, now in the 21st century.
