World Health Organization: Origins, policies, historical path and actions during the COVID-19 pandemic

This work exposes the construction process and the historical paths of the World Health Organization (WHO), from its origin to the current political and epidemiological scenario, highlighting its role in confronting COVID-19. As a methodological reference, a narrative review was used, through litera-ture search in different databases, without restriction on data publication. Initially, the elements and processes that supported the creation of the agen-cy were identified. Then, for example, they were considered as WHO’s con-duct in the face of the HIV/Aidsepidemic, considered one of the most im-portant in history. The organization’s political, economic and institutional conflicts are considered from the perspective of the conduct adopted in the pandemic of the new coronavirus, classified as Public Health Emergency of International Importance (PHEII). In addition to the international scope, we highlight WHO’s interventions in Brazil during the pandemic and the evaluation of these actions by the current Brazilian government. In sum-mary, there is an uncertain scenario regarding the political decisions that will be adopted by the agency, considering the challenge of facing a health crises amidst political disputes.
