Resumo: The social distancing, imposed by the pandemic, led to the adaptation of education to the remote learning model. Problematization, and in groups, methodology, with the use of social media, constitutes an innovative space of assistance and dialogue that can contribute to the promotion of self-care in diabetes. This study, based on freirean principles, consists in an experience report from an extension activity, whose objective is to describe the experience of diabetes remote education for the promotion of self-care in the COVID-19 pandemic. Diabetes education was carried out through WhatsApp, consisting of three moments: survey of the themes and planning of educational interventions; implementation; and evaluation of educational interventions. The themes were related to self-care in diabe-tes during the COVID-19 pandemic, and discussed by the professor/tutor and undergraduate students from Nursing, Nutrition, Physical education and Psychology courses at UFPE. The extension experience signals the importance of using social media in order to facilitate communication, exchange experiences, (re) construct knowledge and encourage adheren-ce to self-care in diabetes to achieve glycemic control. Besides, it makes it possible to go beyond the walls of the university and to do academic training based on the needs of the community, with multiprofessional and interdisciplinary work that prepares students for the challenges of professional practice.
