Resumo: Este artigo busca problematizar categoria artefatual bastante recorrente nos contextos materiais sobre os quais a Arqueologia tende a se debruçar: as louças brasileiras. Argumenta-se que identifica-las nos sítios arqueológicos históricos nacionais é questionar as bases epistemológicas de uma Arqueologia voltada a um passado “antigo”, adentrando, portanto, o temido século XX; é entender que a inexorabilidade da louça branca deve ser questionada e que o barateamento da produção nacional propiciou seu uso, com maior intensidade, por grupos sociais que nem sempre as possuíam em seu dia-a-dia; e, por fim, é reconhecer que a Arqueologia Brasileira destaca, em alguns aspectos, o estrangeiro, em especial pela supervalorização dada, em diversas pesquisas, às louças inglesas.Abstract: This paper aims to highlight a common artifact over which Brazilian Archeology tends to not research about: Brazilian refined earthenwares. It is argued that identify these Brazilian potteries at archaeological historic sites question epistemological foundations of an Archaeology based on the study of the “ancient”, entering the so feared 20th century; it is to understand that English refined earthenwares are not a kind of “natural” choice and that national production of those wares turn cheaper an object that few social groups could afford during the 19th century. Finally, it is to recognize that Brazilian Archaeology still values, sometimes, the “foreign”, particularly by the overvaluation of English pottery.
