Resumo: The article presents the history of research and reports on shell mounds, focusing on lithic industry of the sambaquieiros (people of brazilian shellmounds) studies, seeking to understand the relationship between scientific practice and the paradigms of each historical moment in this specific field. In this work, we address the discipline in the Brazilian Empire, viewed through the lens of cultural evolutionism and diffusionism, within the historical-cultural paradigm inherited from prehistoric studies in England, France, and Denmark. We believe that archaeology, in studying the shell mounds and their lithic tools, contributed to the ordering and creation of discourses and the imperial world, sometimes elaborating fanciful and discordant explanations about the “nation’s past” and how ancient and contemporary peoples to the Empire were understood and represented.

Nesse trabalho tratamos da disciplina no Brasil Império, estando sob a ótica do evolucionismo cultural e difusionismo dentro do paradigma histórico-cultural herdado dos estudos de pré-histórica da Inglaterra, França e Dinamarca.
