Resumo: Analysis of hearths at four Southern Proto-Je settlements in Pinhal da Serra (RS) region has allowed understanding issues related to fire technology and fuel economy in this society. The hearths were examined from a qualitative perspective, considering its structural and contextual characteristics; fuels were examined within an anthracological approach. The methodology allowed figuring out some traditional practices related to the acquisition and use of fire, use and selection of fuels, resources gathering, vegetation, and landscape. The results suggest that fire assumed a central role in domestic and ceremonial spaces. The structural characteristics of each hearth represent technological choices and a large knowledge of burning process. Possible evidence of specific uses of palm, bamboo, and Inga sp. might suggest some kind of fuel selection. Firewood was probably acquired through the gathering of fallen dead wood in the forest and logging, in an Araucaria forest with secondary vegetation. These results are an important contribution to a better understanding of the Southern Proto-Je occupation and to the comprehension of the relationships of these groups with their plant environment in the Araucaria Plateau.

Abstract: Analysis of hearths at four Southern Proto-Je settlements in Pinhal da Serra (RS) region has allowed understanding issues related to fire technology and fuel economy in this society.
